Hiddenness lyrically combines Berssenbrugge’s seven-part poem, in which she engages issues of memory, identity, and sensation, with four vividly colored images made by Tuttle. The artists’ collaboration challenges viewers’ expectations as to what a book can be as well as their modes of perception: Berssenbrugge’s poetry evokes the body and the senses while Tuttle’s pieces transcend—both visually and physically—the confines of the page. The material quality of the handmade paper and the book’s accordion fold add to the physical, interactive experience that Hiddenness demands.
