Three Fair Ladies (Geisha Girls with Fans)
Mortimer Menpes
1887–88 · Drypoint with platetone on chine collé · Drawings and Prints

Three women wearing Japanese kimonos and holding fans, face the viewer, with another shadowy figure behind. Menpes moved to England from Australia in 1875, met James McNeill Whistler in 1880, and became the latter's student. Menpes learned how to etch from Whistler, and traveled to Japan in 1887. This print demonstrates the influence of that trip upon his imagery and sense of design.
