元至明初 玉雕雙兔|Two rabbits
Unknown
14th–15th century · Jade · Asian Art

This intimate image of a rabbit and its kit is shaped from a single jade pebble. The carver has artfully incorporated portions of the brownish staining on the pebble’s surface to suggest the animals’ mottled coats. The flat underside suggests that the sculpture was likely used as a paperweight on a scholar’s desk.
