Drawing of La Fontaine crowned by the muses by Charles Eisen bound in. Contemporary red morocco binding with gold fillets and arms of Antoine-Jean Amelot de Chaillou (1732-1795), French politician and President of the Académie royale des sciences, who was killed by the French Revolution Tribunal. Armorial stamp contains three gold hearts; French blue watered silk endleaves. Famed French poet Jean de La Fontaine's (1621-1695) collection of fabulist poems and short stores. With a narrative form and bawdy topics, La Fontaine's verse is similar to the works of François Rabelais (c.1483-1553) commenting on the morality of everyday humankind.
