The Della Robbia Pottery in northwestern England was short lived (1894–1906) but it produced an impressive corpus of work during its twelve-year history. Founded on the principals of the Arts and Crafts Movement, the factory sought inspiration in the ceramics of fifteenth and sixteenth-century Florence. This large dish is an excellent example of the factory’s work; technically it looks back to Italian Renaissance ceramic techniques yet it embraces stylistically both the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements that prevailed at the time.
