18th century · Black lacquer inlaid with mother-of-pearl · Asian Art

Tiny fragments of mother-of-pearl were inlaid into a black lacquer base to create the scene of a woman resting in a garden. She is seated on a stool beneath a tree, and a table with a flower arrangement and other implements is set before her. Even more miniscule pieces of mother-of-pearl define the collarlike motifs at the neck of the bottle.
