This drawing by Miguel Covarrubias portrays a Preclassic Highland Mexico figurine raising her arms over her head, tilting her head to the right, and wearing only a thin skirt. Miguel Covarrubias was a Mexican painter, caricaturist, ethnologist and art historian. His illustrated writings reflect his deep interest in and profound understanding of the life, customs, and culture of primitive peoples and have gained him recognition well beyond his native Mexico. To scholars in the field of Precolumbian art he is particularly known for his writings on the Olmec and early village cultures of central Mexico.
