This maquette is a study for a large glass room with the same title currently in the collection of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a response to the Second Battle of Fallujah in 2004 during the Iraq War. Though Armajani’s architecture work often addresses social issues, this piece is among his most political. The rocking horse, light bulb, and cut-out flames are directly influenced by Picasso’s Guernica, which famously called out the atrocities of war. The remains of defunct furniture, and the house’s collapsing structure suggest the violence that has passed through, without explicitly showing it.
