The tension between text and image, and reading and seeing, is central to Wool’s art. The large black stenciled letters of his “word paintings” elicit a graphic power and a strangeness that are amplified by their isolation. In this print, however, Wool liberates letters from linguistic responsibilities. Rendered in gray tones, the letters vary in size and font and deny a sense of uniformity, as their gracefully curved forms become entangled with one another and the wiry lines strung across the image’s surface. Interspersed throughout are decorative elements, such as floral forms and beaded lines, that evoke works and processes found across his oeuvre. In Untitled, Wool embraces a collage aesthetic in which shifting planes and layers of color and form create a dynamic energy that reverberates throughout the work.
