Untitled, 2013 — Golnaz Fathi

Golnaz Fathi has roots in traditional Persian calligraphy. This diptych speaks specifically to the tradition of siyah mashq, wherein artists created practice pages of calligraphic strokes to strengthen the hand and instill dexterity. The image becomes an abstract field, it is built up of small undulating marks that resemble a seismic graph or an electrocardiogram. It is also a meditative work, with bounds that extend beyond the frame of the canvas to the edges.
