The Ndyuka, a Maroon group—enslaved Africans who escaped and formed settlements, often with indigenous peoples—​ believe drums are essential in communicating with gods and for singing and dancing. Apinti drums, carved in low relief with traditional Ndyuka designs, share features derived from drums used by the Ashanti people in Africa.
