In his book Intaglio Simultaneous Color Printmaking (1988), Krishna wrote: "In the world of nature nothing stands still. Nature is in a state of constant movement and change." River reflects a landscape Krishna saw in southern France. The dark, vertically arranged forms lead the eye to the back of the composition, conveying the sensation of a bend in a riverbank and surrounding trees. Layers of colors and textural effects suggest the river’s ripples, rhythms, and reflections from the sun. Krishna sought to capture the shifting effects of light, shade, and water flow. His prints of this period are characterized by an extreme fluidity. Colors and shapes blend seamlessly with one other and with their environment, leading some to describe his ethereal forms as almost "boneless."
