The artist shows himself in the process of making his portrait, grasping a drawing tool or an etching needle in his hand. His use of color ink for the facial tone and hair stands out against the otherwise monochromatic drypoint lines. Executed in the same year as his solo exhibition of color etchings, the work exemplifies Raffaëlli’s experimental ambitions for color printmaking. He contributed this work to the second album of André Marty’s "L’Estampe originale" (1893–1895), a landmark series that staked a claim for printmaking as an innovative artistic medium.
