Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he manipulates the tonal possibilities of aquatint to show forms near the Thames obscured by mist--barges are moored at center, and the arches of a bridge stretches across the river near warehouses. The artist printed about thirty-five proofs.
