This painted enamel plaque is decorated with five poisonous creatures that feature in Chinese folklore: from left to right, the centipede, toad, snake, scorpion, and spider. It was likely used as a decoration and a charm with magic power. Although the animals can seem harmful, Chinese people believe that they can keep the house and its residents safe by dispelling evil influences.
