The tuxedo emerged as semi-formal eveningwear in the mid-1880s, based on a design for a tailless dinner jacket commissioned by the Prince of Wales, later Edward VI. The term “tuxedo” derives from the suit style worn by prominent members of society in the New York City suburb, Tuxedo Park. Today, the suit consists of a black jacket with peaked lapels or a shawl collar in grosgrain or satin and trousers with a satin stripe at the side seams. The suit is traditionally worn with a white collared shirt, black bowtie, and black cummerbund. This bespoke tuxedo was made by the Savile Row tailors Fallan & Harvey, founded by Keith Fallan and Peter Harvey on Sackville Street in 1975.
