This specific ceramic body—an unglazed porcelain resembling white marble—was introduced in the 1840s by the firm of Copeland in England, and it was used extensively for the production of small scale sculpture intended to be affordable to the middle classes. Famous Ancient and modern sculptures were reproduced in greatly reduced scale in this new medium, and Parian statuary by the Copeland firm achieved a great success at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
