Hatshepsut's Mother, Queen Ahmose

This facsimile painting copies an image of Queen Ahmose, mother of the female king Hatshepsut, in the latter's temple at Deir el-Bahri. The original is part of a sequence of scenes that illustrate the divine conception and birth of Hatshepsut. In this series, the god Amun visits Ahmose in order to impregnates her, and thus to confirm Hatshepsut as a divine and therefore legitimate ruler. This particular scene shows the pregnant Ahmose being escorted by the ram-headed god Khnum and the frog-headed Heqet into the chamber where she will give birth.
