Yan Ciyu, to whom this fan was once attributed, is represented today by a single signed album leaf now in the Freer Gallery, Washington, D.C. In contrast to the restrained and dramatic manner of the Freer landscape, which is painted in the blue-and-green style of Li Tang (ca. 1070s–ca. 1150s), the flattish, formalistic design of the Crawford painting, with its heavily outlined trees and rocks and sharply silhouetted hills, is indebted to the stylistic developments of Ma Yuan and Xia Gui (both act. ca. 1190–1225).
