Scarab Inscribed with the Name Amenhotep (Amenhotep III)

The base of this scarab is inscribed with the name Amenhotep, written with a solar barque of Amun at the top and the hetep-hieroglyph in the center. The heqa and was-scepters below specify that he is the ruler of Thebes, thus referring to Amenhotep III (Dynasty 18, ca. 1390-1352 B.C.) with whom this royal epithet was often associated. However, this scarab does not date to his reign; the morphology of the scarab indicates that it belongs to the Third intermediate Period (ca. 1070-664 B.C.) and reflects our understanding that this great pharaoh was adored after his reign.
