Anthropomorphic and zoomorphic masks, belonging to palace and ritual secret societies, are the most prevalent sculpture in the western Grasslands of Cameroon. These carved images, seen here at both ends of this side-blown trumpet, extend to ritual objects and instruments linked to secret institutions. Trumpets like this one produce one or two pitches and are played singly, or in ensembles.
