Men’s societies used stick rattles as part of their dance regalia. Bits of horn or dewclaws (vestigial hooves) from deer, pronghorn antelope, or bison, along with cone-shaped jingles or thimbles, provided the rattle’s clattering sound. Such rattles were used in dances preceding and after battles.
