The horn was used during the hunt to communicate with participants who were often spread out beyond the range of the human voice. A series of distinctive calls kept the hunt apprised of events as they unfolded in the field. This compact form of the horn, referred to as the trompe maricourt, was used for the "small hunt" of rabbits, squirrels and other small game pursued on foot.
