This decorative side-blown horn is a nineteenth-century imitation of Afro-Portuguese-style horns. The coat of arms and insignia decorating the side are those of Isabella and Sigismonodo Malataesta, Italian nobles. This horn continues a fifteenth-and sixteenth-century tradition but adds various later Eurpean decorative elements. Certain features, such as the figure at the tip and the ridged area below the mouthpiece, suggest that it may in part be the work of the Mende people of Sierra Leone.
