Gilbert Adrian—better known simply as Adrian—was a dress and costume designer who enjoyed an extremely successful career designing gowns for Hollywood films from the 1920s until World War II, when he opened his own fashion house. This textile (and the dress for which it was used as the front panel) was designed by Adrian and shown at the 1945 "American Fashions and Fabrics" exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The motif incorporated archetypal, instantly-recognizable images from the ancient classical world: a warrior's helmet and the curling hair and eye of a bust.
