Born Karl Emanuel Martin Weber in Berlin, the artist immigrated in 1914 to the United States and adopted the less Germanic name "Kem" by combining his first three initials. From 1921 to 1924, he was the art director for the Los Angeles store Barker Brothers, the largest furniture retailer in the United States. Through Barker Brothers, Weber became a prominent exponent of modern design throughout southern California. This vase is a hallmark of Weber’s streamlined style; its clean lines and long, graceful silhouette convey the popular Art Deco aesthetic.
