Marin returned to New York in 1910, after five years in Europe, where he witnessed firsthand the aesthetic revolution brought about by the Fauves in France. He created a vibrant new style for himself and applied it to views of downtown Manhattan, then exploding in new development. This work, one of many similar watercolors, was exhibited at his landmark 1913 exhibition at Alfred Stieglitz’s “291” gallery.
