Marca-Relli was a founding member of The Club, the meeting place of the New York Abstract Expressionists. Although he was born in Boston, Marca-Relli visited Italy frequently and thus imbued his work with a refined, European sensibility that is reflected in the materials he used: stained and painted canvas that is cut with a knife. Like other artists in his circle, his abstractions begin with figuration. In this work, one can make out the legs of the “witnesses” seated on a bench.
