Bottle with Abstract Design
Bernard Leach
ca. 1958 · Stoneware with incised design, slip, and glaze · Modern and Contemporary Art

One of the most influential potters of the twentieth century, Leach played a seminal role in introducing Chinese Song dynasty (960–1279) and Japanese folk pottery traditions to the West. The blue glaze on this jar and the sketchy decoration show the influence of these traditions, which Leach deemed more expressive than works produced in European factory kilns.
