"Gazelle" Bowl

Elegant Art Deco gazelles run around the periphery of this bowl, creating a sense of movement that recalls that of ancient Greek red and black painted vases. Attic painted vases from the sixth century B.C. in particular were often decorated with friezes of running animals or athletes. During the early twentieth century, the Steuben Glass Works built its reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality glassware. An especially high lead content makes their glass blanks highly refractive—a suitable foil to the detailed engraved decoration that characterizes much of the firm's output.
