Claudius Linossier

Like his teacher, Jean Dunand, Linossier excelled in the traditional craft of dinanderie. This vase was displayed at the 1924 exhibition of the Société des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris, where it was acquired by Florence Blumenthal (1873–1930), wife of George Blumenthal (1858–1941), a director of the Paris-based investment bank Lazard Frères and then a trustee of The Met. In 1919, the Blumenthals, major patrons of French designers and artists of the Art Deco era, established the Fondation Américaine pour l’Art et la Pensée Française (American Foundation for French Art and Thought), an organization that awarded financial grants to French artists, craftsmen, and writers. Linossier received the grant in 1922.
