Lucie Rie

Rie, one of the preeminent potters of the twentieth century, created ceramics of sophisticated and controlled refinement. She limited her forms for the most part to vases, bowls, and platters. Their appeal lay in the elegance of their shapes and the richness and variety of their glazes. Rie experimented with a wide spectrum of colors, and her glazes ranged from smooth to deeply pitted. She seldom applied decoration, and when it appeared it was abstract and discreet, used to enhance the piece rather than to call attention to itself. This vase is a superb example of one of Rie's most successful stoneware glazes.
