Emanation
Anselm Kiefer
1985 · Shellac and crayon over cut, torn, and pasted photographs · Modern and Contemporary Art

In this abstract composition made of various photographs that have been cut and torn, treated to various processes of surface change, and then assembled, we chart a mysterious form traveling down through the clouds, materially transforming as it approaches the landscape. Kiefer inscribed the word "emanation" along the right side of the work, as if identifying where the heavenly form first meets the earthly realm.
