The Inn — Arthur Dove

Although its shapes are difficult to identify, this late work by Dove suggests an aerial view of a landscape with trees and buildings. The title suggests that the view was taken either from or toward one of two inns near Dove's home at Centerport, Long Island. Throughout his career, Dove experimented with various materials to obtain a range of visual effects. Here, for example, he mixed oil paint and wax to produce a flat, matte finish that contrasts with the metallic shine of aluminum paint.
