Edouard Cazaux

Cazaux, a ceramist as well as a sculptor, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. While experimenting with stoneware, faience, and glazes, he attended drawing and modeling classes, coming under the influence of the sculptor Charles Despiau. The subject of this vessel—the archer—had been a popular theme in traditional sculpture for centuries; here, however, the flat, stylized figures are treated more as pattern than sculpture.
