Armchair
Antoni Gaudí i Cornet
ca. 1902–4 · Walnut · Modern and Contemporary Art

Gaudí's organic, highly decorated architecture and interiors transformed turn-of-the-century Barcelona. The fluid curves of his designs may bear a superficial resemblance to those of Art Nouveau, but they have a vigor all their own. Rather than recalling plant forms, Gaudí's furniture at its most bizarre, such as this chair, suggests the stance of predatory insects.
