Émile Gallé, the famed Art Nouveau glassmaker, died in 1904, and his widow kept his glassworks open until the outbreak of World War I, in 1914. In 1919 Gallé’s son-in-law Paul Perdrizet re-opened the business, running it until 1936. The company (then known as Établissements Gallé) specialized in acid-etched cameo glass such as this example. A series of animal-motif vessels, including designs with polar bears, was introduced at Gallé’s display at the 1925 Paris exposition.
