Harry Dickinson Thrasher

A long-time assistant in the studio of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Thrasher was awarded in 1911 a prestigious three-year scholarship by the American Academy in Rome for study and travel. He probably completed this naturalistic representation of a duck after his return from Rome to the United States. Considered by his contemporaries a sculptor of great natural talent, Thrasher modeled both portraits and more imaginative ideal compositions. He was killed in France in 1918 while serving in the Camouflage Corps of Army Engineers; several months later The Met acquired this statuette.
