4th century · Glass · Medieval Art

Excavations by the Metropolitan Museum at a necropolis in Egypt's Libyan Desert revealed a domed funerary chapel with an intriguing form of decoration: glass vessels of various shapes and colors impressed into the plaster of the dome. These fragments come from a shallow bowl made of greenish-clear glass with a molded decoration of concentric circles within a checkerboard.
