Head of a Youth
Unknown
ca. 1230–50 · Limestone · The Cloisters

This clean face does not appear to have been part of a full head but rather was incorporated, masklike, into a corbel. The tonsured hair would be appropriate for a monastic context. The face is strikingly similar to those on a corbel near the chapter house at the royal abbey of Saint-Denis. Other damaged corbels in the vicinity may be the source of this face.
