東海道五十三次之内 三島 朝霧|Mishima, Asa Kiri — Utagawa Hiroshige

A man on horseback wears a garment with the well-curb pattern (resembling a ticktacktoe board) that is strongly identified with the ikat, or kasuri, technique. Hiding his face under a hat, he creates an atmosphere of melancholy. Another individual is in a palanquin, among other travelers leaving the torii gate of Mishima Shrine in the early morning. The background silhouettes of building and trees are in tones of blue and gray to suggest mist.
