Enthusiasm for embarking on Crusade waned during the fourteenth century, notwithstanding the the tight links drawn between belief in the True Cross and in the Crucifixion of Jesus, here witnessed not only by his mother Mary and Saint John (much effaced), but by a knight and his lady.
