This fan painted during the war years reflects the poignancy that traditional subjects, such as flowers, butterflies and vegetables, acquire in times of distress. Ch'ien's inscription reads: The field and garden have gone uncultivated since the war. Where can we find enough food for this year of famine? I often think of the late autumns in the peaceful past. The fragrant bean and luscious fruit were cheap. Ch'ien Sung-yen succeeded Fu Pao-shih as director of the Nanking Painting Academy.
