Chen Zhifo spent six years studying arts and crafts in Japan. After the age of thirty-five, he concentrated on traditional Chinese "meticulous brush" paintings like the one shown here. It is confined to a narrow range of delicate colors and retains a Japanese sensitivity to silhouette and the beauty of a particular moment. The inscription reads: There is morning frost on the autumn garden. The yellow flower exudes a delicate fragrance. [Trans. Ellsworth et al, Later Chinese Painting]
