Saint Anthony
France
ca. 1480–85 · Tempera and liquid gold on parchment · Robert Lehman Collection

The anonymous artist who painted this miniature was greatly influenced by the French painter and illuminator Jean Fouquet. This leaf belonged to a lavishly illustrated book of hours from which thirty-one other detached leaves survive. The group is distinguished by the use of illusionistically painted architectural frames surrounding a central scene—in this case, Saint Anthony seated in a landscape. Particularly noteworthy are the beautifully preserved liquid-gold highlights on the saint’s garments and walking stick.
