This leaf probably comes from an Epistolary-Evangelary, a type of book (sometimes in two volumes) that gives both the Gospel and Epistle readings for each feast of the liturgical year. The illuminator, whose name is not known, is believed to have worked in Bruges in the last quarter of the fifteenth century. His talent for narrative illustration is evident in the expansive outdoor setting and the careful placement of animated figures. The elegant border decoration, filled with illusionistically painted flora and fauna, is typical of Netherlandish illumination of this period.
