Cope
Unknown
mid-15th century · Silk cut velvet · Robert Lehman Collection

This cope with a self-orphery is pieced from dark green silk cut voided velvet patterned in an allover stepped repeat of a five-lobed shape enclosing a symmetrically placed stylized plant reminiscent of a pomegranate. The lobed shape is surmounted by smaller plant devices on a branch that echoes its outline. Two fragments, a chasuble, and a cope in cut voided velvet in a similar pattern are in the Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire, Brussels.
