An illustrator and poster artist, Steinlen’s flamboyant imagery of the café concert invites comparison with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, his neighbor in Paris. Steinlen was the principal illustrator of Le Mirliton, a journal published by Aristide Bruant, the owner of a cabaret by the same title. Steinlen made this drawing as a cover design for the 17 February 1893 issue of the journal, to illustrate the song “Tha-ma-ra-boum-di-hé” and its accompanying dance, the high-kicking chahut.
