Morisot enjoyed a life of privilege and culture in France, where she studied with Camille Pissarro and her brother-in-law Édouard Manet and was included in seven of the eight Impressionist group exhibitions. This drawing is one of three preparatory studies for the large oil of the same title (private collection). The swift strokes and the sitter’s rounded facial features clearly reveal the influence of Renoir, with whom Morisot was close.
