Two Drinkers — Honoré Daumier

The paintings, drawings, and prints of Daumier, the great caricaturist of Parisian life during the Second Empire, are populated with lively revelers. Here, the artist richly individualized his subjects, tracing their expressions first in charcoal and then in pen and ink to create light and shadow and to indicate volume. His numerous tests of the sharpness of his brush and the tone of his wash at the upper right demonstrate his working process.
